Zoo Owl – No Fun

It’s been a couple of years since we last heard from avian electronic instigator Zoo Owl, his masterful, swampy debut album Hollow remaining the best document of his nocturnal prowess. We’re ecstatic that he’s back, and with an electro-punky track that is one of his catchiest singles to date. “No Fun” is a positively sizzling jam, with a heavy distorted instrumental hook that will make your entire body course with electricity. Charge up!

If you’re in Toronto, be sure to check out Zoo Owl on a bill full of Silent Shout faves, happening Saturday May 13 at Handlebar.

It’s been a breakout year for Toronto pop songsmith Robin Dann aka Bernice, who continues to release jaw-dropping, complex music that’s worthy of all the world’s attentions. A couple of weeks back, she released her latest, “Talking About Her”, and it’s just stunning, featuring some incredible instrumentation and a glorious percussive hook. We’re enthralled.

Luckily for us, we’ve more to look forward to, soon! Bernice is releasing an EP on June 16, her first on Arts & Crafts, and based on this track and previous single “St Lucia” it will probably blow us away. You can pre-order Puff now from Bandcamp.

L CON – How Much Shall We Bet?

We’ve been regrettably slow in sharing this remarkable stop-motion video for L CON‘s equally remarkable single “How Much Shall We Bet?”, from last year’s opus (and our #13 album of last year) Moon Milk. Directed and animated by Chantale Renee, the video tells a tale of a solitary creature, stuck in a routine, not leaving its apartment as time journeys on. It’s a comical but bleak gaze into the lonelier side of muppetdom, and a perfect pairing for the single’s soul-searching refrain: “Are you happy?”

Moon Milk remains essential listening and is available now from Bandcamp. If you’re in Toronto, be sure to catch L CON’s show with Silent Shout faves James Irwin and EONS on May 26 at Burdock.

Kae Dal – Liar

Toronto bedroom pop prodigy Katie McBride has decided to dispense with frivolous syllables and is now decidedly going by Kae Dal. And with the change of name comes a new single, one that’s even more grandiose and gripping than her lovely, delicate second EP 08215. Lush orchestration and soaring melodies carry the tune to wondrous heights, and it’s clear that McBride is stratosphere-bound. We’ll be watching her inevitable ascent with awe and admiration.

08215 is available now from Kae Dal’s Bandcamp.

Wolf Saga – When the Storm has Passed

With all the pop magnificence London’s Wolf Saga has been providing us with lately it’s been easy to lose sight of the prodigious producer’s sublime sense of synth majesty. So his new instrumental single “When the Storm has Passed” is a massive, soul-shaking reminder that larger-than-life synths are most definitely Johnny Saga’s forte extraordinaire. Also, there’s a new EP on the way! Wolf Saga never disappoints, so we’ll be convening our wolfpack for the highly anticipated first listening.

“When the Storm has Passed” is available now from Bandcamp.

Joanne Pollock – Carnival

We’ve been waiting for this news for some time: Toronto bedroom pop explorer Joanne Pollock is releasing her first full-length album! We were immense fans of her 2015 EP Optimist, one of our very favourite records of that year. “Carnival,” the first song to emerge from the forthcoming Stranger (out June 16) sees Pollock getting contemplative over an intoxicatingly complex beat. It’s a highly intelligent experimental pop tune that feels effortless, despite charting a course that follows no familiar rules or comfortable forms. We can’t wait to hear what the whole album has in store!

Stranger is available for pre-order now. If you’re in Toronto, she’s performing at Wavelength’s “Sex & Death” showcase this Thursday at the Monarch.

James Irwin – Natural Feeling

It’s been a couple of years since we last heard from Montreal sometimes-electronic troubador James Irwin, when he released his endlessly impressive second album Unreal. And now that its successor Shabbytown is upon us, we needn’t be Irwinless any longer. A fantastically strong collection of new tunes, it contains many memorable electronic songs too, with the synths and vocoders on “Natural Feeling” standing out for their subtle genius. We love!

James Irwin is on tour now in Ontario and Montreal, check the dates on his site, where you can also buy Shabbytown.

Kaade – You’ll Find Your Way

Toronto’s Kat Duma, aka Kaade, blew us away with her first single “All the Air” – an instantly unforgettable dark electronic pop gem. So it’s no big shock that we’re equally devoted to her latest, “You’ll Find Your Way”, which sees her do away with some of the smoothness of the debut and add a heavy dose of darkness and distortion. All in all, another mesmerizing, darkly danceable tune, and we think we can be assured of many more to come from this one. What’s next, Kaade?

“You’ll Find Your Way” is available now on Bandcamp. And if you’re in Toronto, Kaade is performing this Friday at the Baby G.

Timber Timbre – Sincerely, Future Pollution

What’s this, we’re writing about the new Timber Timbre record? Taylor Kirk has long had a penchant for the occasional synth and the world of Timber Timbre has always been a dark, slightly disturbing one, so perhaps we shouldn’t be too surprised by sixth album Sincerely, Future Pollution.

Marking his first full-on foray into synth music, it’s still somehow consistent with all the spooky folk/rock records that preceded it, with vocoders and drum machines sounding entirely natural to his aesthetic and in no way gimmicky or showy. An ominous, slightly-apocalyptic record that’s full of meticulously composed details to discover, Sincerely, Future Pollution sees one of Canada’s best at the top of his game. And we hope that this first journey into synthesized realms is only the first of many.

Sincerely, Future Pollution is available now from Arts & Crafts/Bandcamp.

Bad Channels – Exo

We’ve been following Toronto noisy electronic pop coven Bad Channels for a good while now, and we’re elated to know that a new EP – Lost Time I – is just on the horizon. Since their 2014 debut, they’ve released some stunning singles, including last year’s anthem “Stars”. Today, we’re sharing their latest “Exo”, a darkly glittering goth-pop gem, with cavernously reverbed vocals and drums making for a wondrous production style that let’s just call “Wall of Drowned.” We’re gasping!

Lost Time is available now for pre-order from Buzz Records. Bad Channels are on tour next week with Zones in Ottawa, Montreal, and Guelph – check Buzz for details.

Ice Cream – Dress Me Up

Toronto electronic post-punk, post-everything, duo Ice Cream released one of our favourite albums of last year with their full-length debut Love, Ice Cream. In case anyone needed reminding of its brilliance, the slow-burning record closer “Dress Me Up” now has a spookily aquatic new video directed by Christina Carvalho. It’s definitely the right kind of mysterious to match the song’s ominous bass guitar and ghostly synths.

Love, Ice Cream is available now from Bandcamp and on vinyl from Bad Actors. Ice Cream are on tour across Europe right now with Silent Shout fave Scott Hardware, more details on Facebook.

Noita – Pink Noise

We were over the moon for Toronto electro-R&B newcomer Noita‘s debut single “Over Here” last fall, and Noa Southcott’s first full release, debut EP Pink Noise, does not disappoint on the promise of that first glimpse. Not one bit.

A perfect synthesis of futuristic R&B with a deeply grooving electronic backbeat, it all adds up to a daring overall vision that’s both grandiose and subtly detached at the same time. We have a feeling that Pink Noise is just the first document in what’s going to be a seriously impressive career. We’ll be watching!

Pink Noise is available now as a free download from Soundcloud.

Stefana Fratila – Dancing

Last month, newly-Toronto-based experimental pop generator Stefana Fratila took our breath away with her latest single “Dancing”, so we’re only too happy for another opportunity to highlight it with the release of her stunning and ambitious new music video. Directed by Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, it’s a vivid vignette of misogyny, revenge, and victorious dancing that matches the various phases of the track to a T. As with all of Fratila’s work, we’re enthralled yet again.

“Dancing” is available now digitally and on VHS via Bandcamp, with all profits going towards Intersessions, a series of DJ workshops curated for and by women, gender-nonconforming & queer folks.

Omhouse – Nursery

It’s been more than a little while since we last heard from Toronto‘s Steven Foster aka Omhouse, but Mooneye was one of our favourite records of 2014, so we’ve always been eagerly awaiting any word of new music. And now we’ve got a new single! On “Nursery”, as with his past work, we’re not quite sure how Foster manages to make complexity sound so simple and effortless. And we definitely have no clue what time signature we’re in. But the way the melody gently coasts atop the riffing guitars, it’s all so natural that there’s no need to count. Also: that mellotron!

“Nursery” is available now from Bandcamp. If you’re in Toronto, catch Omhouse at the Baby G this Tuesday.

GAIIA – Smile

The clattering beat and ghostly synths of “Smile” make for an ominous re-introduction to Toronto/France duo Giselle Janette and Aimée Jagou, aka GAIIA. And the new single arrives with a terrific video! Directed by Katrina Singleton, it features two women preparing for a photo shoot, and things seem alright at first, but when the song turns dark, things quickly get weird. Blinding flashes attack them and their expressions go through various contortions of discomfort, pain, and frustration, but by the shoot’s end it seems as though they’ve passed through the darkness. We’re not sure where they’re headed next, but this song is ridiculously good and we can’t wait to hear what GAIIA have in store for us next time.

“Smile” is available now from Bandcamp.

Doldrums – Heater

We haven’t quite had time to recover from Doldrums‘ latest single “Runnerup”, and now he’s already hitting us with “Heater”. A far more in-your-face track, it features a pummelling sequenced bass synth and clattering claps, and masterful quick cuts between sections, all-in-all the most innovative club track we’ve heard since, possibly, “Loops”. And the video’s excellent too! Directed by Jordan Minkoff, it sees the band performing on a creepy cable access show that’s straight out of your most wonderfully surreal nightmares.

Doldrums is readying his third album Esc for release June 30, with July release shows in Toronto and Montreal. All info and pre-orders are at Bandcamp.

Tess Roby – Ballad 5

We haven’t heard from Montreal electronic pop auteur Tess Roby in some time, and we should have known that means she’s been busy cooking up something big. “Ballad 5” is a stunning, wondrously dreamy, instant-classic slow-burning electronic ballad (mixed by Johnny Jewel!), and it arrives with a meditative, sumptuously red video shot on Super 8, directed by Roby herself and Hugo Bernier. The best news of all? She’ll be releasing her debut full-length album this year! On Italians Do It Better. We don’t yet know when, but we’ll just wander the streets aimlessly trying to find meaning until we can hear it.

“Ballad 5″ is available now on 12” with a lovely b-side from Italians Do It Better.

Leucrocuta – When All the Animals are Dead

We’re not sure what dimension Toronto electronic pop newcomer Leucrocuta has fallen into (or emerged from), but her debut EP When All the Animals are Dead is a fascinating artifact from that distant, dark, and strange place. The title track is merely one highlight of many, featuring wonderfully soupy production, scattered percussive blips, and one gloriously psychedelic hook. All in all, a very promising first missive from an alternate pop universe.

When All the Animals are Dead is available now from Bandcamp.

Emay – Yesu

We’ve been loving Mubarik Adams aka Emay‘s debut album Ilah since it was released in February, and it’s even a better listen in the summer. A remarkably dense work, Ilah is full of boundless ideas both production-wise and lyrical, with the Hamilton rapper unafraid to get political, theoretical, or prophetic. It’s also a deeply meditative listen, that gets to the heart of identity from many angles while maintaining a focus on justice and social change. “Yesu”, featuring Rae and L-SPEX, may be one of the clear highlights of the record, but these songs aren’t meant to be heard in isolation.

Ilah is available now PWYW from Bandcamp.
